Former Lakers player thinks LeBron James should leave the team
A former Los Angeles Lakers player and coach thinks it is time for LeBron James to move on and find a new team.
Byron Scott, who spent 11 years playing for the Lakers and another two as their coach, suggested it was time for James to leave the Lakers. While he does not believe James needs to retire, he does believe it would be best for all involved for James to play somewhere else next season.
“I’m a fan, but I don’t mince words. I think this should be his last year here. You don’t have to go home, but you’ve got to get the hell up out of here,” Scott said.

— TheTruth (@TheTruth8240) February 27, 2026
While James remains an excellent player, there is certainly a perception that the Lakers are moving on and making Luka Doncic their focal point instead. James has also made it clear that he thinks the current iteration of the Lakers cannot win a title, which may help push him out the door anyway.
James is averaging 21.5 points, 7.0 assists, and 5.7 rebounds per game this season at age 41. He is certainly playing well enough to keep going if he wants to, and he has already started getting linked to some new teams when his contract expires this summer.
Clint Capela fires back at Deandre Ayton
Clint Capela was not a fan of a catching a stray this week from Deandre Ayton.
The Los Angeles Lakers center Ayton went viral after Wednesday’s loss to the Orlando Magic over a shady comment that he made referencing Capela. Ayton, apparently unhappy about his role on offense with the Lakers, made a loud comment in the locker room in which he said “I’m not no Clint Capela!”
On Thursday, the Houston Rockets center Capela got wind of Ayton’s remark and decided to fire back. He quote-posted a graphic of Ayton’s comment to his Instagram Story and included a shady caption of his own.
“U got 2 of the best floor general[s] in the game my dawg Lockinnn,” said Capela along with laughing-face emojis.

— Hoop Central (@TheHoopCentral) February 27, 2026
The former No. 1 overall pick Ayton feels that there is more to his game than simply catching lobs at the rim, which Capela has been one of the best in the NBA at doing over the last several years. But Capela’s retort is that Ayton is playing with Luka Doncic and LeBron James, so any offensive woes are probably Ayton’s own fault.
In any case, the Lakers went on to lose on Thursday as well to the Phoenix Suns, falling by a final score of 111-108 at Mortgage Matchup Center in Phoenix, Ariz. Ayton finished that game with a hapless two points on 1/3 shooting and four rebounds, continuing on what has been a rough debut season for him in L.A. from the very start.
Lions’ Terrion Arnold linked to armed robbery in Florida
Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold has been linked to an armed robbery and kidnapping in Florida in a new court order.
The court order alleges that Arnold and a group of friends planned an armed robbery and kidnapping as retaliation for a pair of robberies that took place at Arnold’s rental home, via Nolan Bianchi of the Detroit News. It alleges that Boakai Hilton, one of the perpetrators, planned the robbery while traveling in a car with Arnold.
The document claims that Arnold suspected that his driver might have been linked to stolen bags, guns, and jewelry, which was reported to authorities on Feb. 3. Arnold and friends “decided to take matters into their own hands,” the document says, and conducted an armed robbery and kidnapping just after midnight on Feb. 4.
Arnold has not been charged or arrested in connection with the incident, though five others have been. The court order does not name him as actively taking part in the robbery itself.
Arnold was the Lions’ first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. After a fairly promising rookie season, injuries held him back in 2025 and limited him to eight games with 31 total tackles and an interception.
Hall of Fame player is leaving Deion Sanders’ Colorado staff
A prominent member of Deion Sanders’ staff at Colorado is leaving his role.
Hall of Fame defensive tackle Warren Sapp, who previously served as the team’s pass rush coordinator, is leaving his role, according to Brian Howell of BuffZone. Sapp is departing to pursue other opportunities.
Hall of Famer Warren Sapp is no longer with the Colorado Buffaloes, as he looks to pursue other opportunities #cubuffs https://t.co/EbtWPpOEL6
— Brian Howell (@BrianHowell33) February 26, 2026
Sapp had originally joined Colorado in 2024 as part of Sanders’ star-studded staff. While he largely stayed in the background, he did get into a minor conflict with a rival quarterback during the 2024 season. The 53-year-old is still renowned for his Hall of Fame career which saw him collect 96.5 career sacks from the defensive tackle position.
Sapp was one of a number of high-profile former NFL stars Sanders tapped for his coaching staff. Many of those big names have departed, either to pursue other opportunities or because they got another job elsewhere.
Colorado is coming off a 3-9 season as Sanders tries to rebuild the roster. He will be filling some holes on his coaching staff, too.
Fernando Mendoza reveals the weirdest question he got at the NFL Combine
Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza received the weirdest advice from one team during meetings at the NFL Combine.
Mendoza was asked about the most bizarre question he received during the informal interview process. The quarterback revealed it was more of a comment than a question, as one team suggested he should get arrested in order to knock himself down draft boards.
“It was, ‘Hey, maybe you should get arrested,’” Mendoza said. “I was a little confused, but then I was like, oh, the slide. So I could slide in the draft.”

Mendoza clarified that it was from a team he had not had a formal interview with. That team almost certainly won’t get a chance to draft Mendoza, but would love the opportunity.
NFL Combine interviews have an infamous history of occasionally being very weird and invasive. Given the importance of the draft to teams, they want to probe a prospect’s entire history and see how he responds in certain situations. That can sometimes lead to questions that would be considered inappropriate at the best of times.
In this instance, Mendoza seemingly heard an off-handed comment rather than any real question. One cannot blame him for finding it awkward, though, especially considering his squeaky-clean reputation.
Ohio State linebacker leaves jaws on the floor at NFL Combine
Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles delivered one of the most electrifying performances in recent NFL Combine history on Thursday in Indianapolis, leaving scouts, analysts, and fellow prospects stunned with his elite athleticism.
At 6-foot-5 and 244 pounds, Styles posted a jaw-dropping 43.5-inch vertical jump—the highest by an off-ball linebacker since 2003 and the best ever for any player 6-4 or taller and 240-plus pounds in that span.
Styles also led all participants with an 11-foot-2 broad jump and tied for the fastest 40-yard dash of the day at 4.46 seconds.
The feat generated massive buzz, with NFL Research highlighting that Styles became the only player since 2003 (at 230-plus pounds) to combine a sub-4.5 40, 40-plus inch vertical, and 11-plus foot broad jump.
Styles’ explosiveness drew comparisons to versatile defenders like Fred Warner, and even prompted reactions from players like Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton.
Entering as a projected top-10 pick, Styles solidified—or perhaps elevated—his status with a perfect or near-perfect Relative Athletic Score among linebackers.
Styles, son of former NFL linebacker Lorenzo Styles Sr., backed up his athletic testing dominance with strong production at Ohio State, including leading the team in tackles last season. His combine showing underscored rare size-speed traits that could make him a top-five selection in April’s 2026 NFL Draft.
Brady Tkachuk not happy with White House over video
Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk expressed his displeasure Thursday with an AI-generated video posted by the White House on its official TikTok account.
The clip, released Sunday following Team USA’s men’s hockey gold medal win over Canada at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, altered footage from a news conference by the Tkachuk brothers at last February’s 4 Nations Face-Off.
Set to Team USA’s goal song “Free Bird,” the doctored video made it appear as though Tkachuk said, “They booed our national anthem, so I had to come out and teach those maple syrup eating f—s a lesson.”
The profanity was bleeped, and the post included a disclaimer noting it contained AI-generated media. The video amassed 11.1 million views on TikTok and spread widely across social platforms.
Tkachuk, an American who captains the NHL team in Canada’s capital, made clear in his first media availability since returning to Ottawa that the content was fabricated.
“Well, it’s clearly fake, because it’s not my voice, not my lips moving,” Tkachuk said, via ESPN. “I’m not in control of any of those accounts. I know that those words would never come out of my mouth. So, I can’t do anything about it.
“It’s not my voice. It’s not what I was saying. I would never say that. That’s not who I am, so I guess I don’t like that video because that would never come out of my mouth, and never had that thought.”
The controversy highlights tensions in the U.S.-Canada hockey rivalry, amplified by the recent Olympic triumph.
Tkachuk emphasized he would never use such language or disparage Canadians in that way, underscoring his frustration with the misrepresentation amid his dual roles as a U.S. gold medalist and Senators leader.
Italian golfer suffers injuries after falling down elevator shaft
Italian professional golfer Andrea Pavan, a two-time winner on the DP World Tour, sustained serious injuries in a freak accident on Wednesday, after falling three stories down an open elevator shaft at his lodging near Cape Town (Stellenbosch area), South Africa.
The 36-year-old stepped through the elevator doors expecting the car to be present, but it was not, causing him to plunge multiple floors. He was immediately rushed to a local hospital, where he underwent at least one major surgery—described in reports as extensive—to address significant damage.
Injuries include severe shoulder trauma and fractures to several vertebrae in his back.
Pavan, who was scheduled to compete in the DP World Tour’s Investec South African Open starting Thursday, has withdrawn from the event.
A former Texas A&M standout and member of the 2009 NCAA Championship team, Pavan has eight professional victories worldwide, including his most recent DP World Tour win at the 2019 BMW International Open.
“By all accounts, he’s in good spirits, thankful to be alive and FaceTiming with his kids,” said Pavan’s former college coach, J.T. Higgins, who had not spoken to Pavan yet but was being updated on his condition.
Pavan’s wife, Audra, and his sister are traveling to join him. Doctors anticipate he will stay in South Africa for at least six weeks before he can be safely evaluated for travel back to the Dallas area.
A GoFundMe campaign organized by his college teammate Matt Van Zandt has been launched to help cover international medical expenses, extended hospitalization, ongoing procedures, recovery costs, and family support amid uncertainties about his future in professional golf.
Friends and fellow players have visited Pavan in the hospital.
Kevin Harvick’s 13-year-old son signs with Toyota
Keelan Harvick, the 13-year-old son of former NASCAR Cup Series champion Kevin Harvick, has signed a long-term development agreement with Toyota Racing Development (TRD), fully committing to a career in NASCAR.
Announced earlier this week, the deal places Keelan in Toyota’s renowned driver development program, which has produced Cup Series talents such as Christopher Bell, Corey Heim, and John Hunter Nemechek.
In 2026, Keelan will partner with RACKLEY W.A.R. and Kevin Harvick, Inc. to compete in dozens of late model races nationwide, driving the No. 62 Toyota Camry with ExxonMobil as a primary sponsor for many events.
Keelan, a third-generation racer, has already achieved significant success. He became the youngest winner of the Snowflake 125 at Five Flags Speedway in December 2025 and followed with a victory at Florence Motor Speedway’s Icebreaker in early February, marking his first Late Model Stock Car win and the youngest winner there.
As the 2024 INEX Young Lions National Champion, he transitioned from Legends cars to Late Models, winning four zMAX CARS Tour Pro Late Model events and two CARS Tour West races in 2025—the first driver to claim Pro Late Model victories in both series in the same season.
After initially exploring opportunities in Europe, including karting events, Keelan shifted focus to NASCAR following an overwhelming experience at an Italian race attended by Formula 1 star Charles Leclerc.
“My main goal is to be just like my dad and just try to make it to the Cup Series,” Keelan told the Associated Press.
Kevin Harvick, who retired in 2023 with 63 Cup wins and the 2014 championship after racing for Chevrolet and Ford, praised Toyota’s comprehensive approach.
“The effort that Toyota puts into, not only the driving piece of it, but the human piece of it is very important to us as a family,” he said.
TRD President Tyler Gibbs added, “Keelan has proven himself on-track… We see a bright future ahead for him, and everyone at Toyota is proud to be part of his journey.”
The program provides on- and off-track support, including access to the Toyota Performance Center for fitness, psychology, recovery, and nutrition. Keelan could be eligible for events like the Daytona 500 as early as 2031.
Steelers ranked last by NFL players
The Pittsburgh Steelers have a history of winning on the field, but they are not faring so well off the gridiron.
ESPN published a story on Thursday that discussed the results of an NFLPA survey regarding organization hospitality and facilities for NFL teams. For the first time in the four years the NFL Players Association has been doing the survey, the Steelers came out last in the report cards.
The Steelers received poor marks for their field condition. Players feel like the Steelers are at a disadvantage because of how much the field gets torn up by high school and college teams using it. The team received an F grade for their locker room, with the report noting the team locker room only has five bathroom stalls. The team’s strength coaches were ranked last in the NFL, though their trainers were first.
The Dolphins ranked first in the survey for the third straight year. The Vikings were second and the Commanders were third.
The NFL — and especially the Steelers — likely will be unhappy about this report leaking. The league’s owners filed a grievance over the players union publishing the report cards. An arbitrator sided with the owners, saying the union could no longer publish the results. It looks like their way around matters was to leak the results.
LeBron James has the worst missed layup of the NBA season
LeBron James was blocked by Father Time at the rim during Thursday’s game.
James and the Los Angeles Lakers faced off on Thursday against the Phoenix Suns. During the third quarter at Mortgage Matchup Center in Phoenix, Ariz., James produced a lowlight for the ages.
After a Suns miss on the other end, Lakers guard Austin Reaves pushed the ball up the floor in semi-transition and hit James with a pass on the left wing. James found an angle to attack the basket with only 6-foot-1 Phoenix guard Collin Gillespie standing in his way and got a room-service layup … or at least he thought that he did.
The four-time NBA champion James embarrassingly smoked the layup from point-blank range (with the useless projectile eventually finding its way into the hands of Suns big man Mark Williams for the defensive rebound). Here is the humiliating video.
LeBron with the amazing layup pic.twitter.com/qh77ejMgjT
— The FBI Report (@TheFBIreport) February 27, 2026
James is 41 years old now and in his 23rd NBA season, so his touch at the rim is obviously not quite what it used to be. But considering how wide-open he was at the time, James had only himself to blame for that horrorshow of a layup attempt.
Fortunately for James, at least he did not flop after his whiff or otherwise start whining for a phantom foul call. But that definitely had to be The King’s worst moment on the court since his pathetic turnover from several years ago that also occurred against the Suns in Phoenix.
Kon Knueppel obliterates NBA rookie record
Charlotte Hornets sharpshooter Kon Knueppel etched his name in the history books Thursday by completely shattering an NBA rookie record.
Knueppel lit up the Indiana Pacers from beyond the arc in a 133-109 win over the Indiana Pacers at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. The Duke alum connected on eight three-pointers for 28 points, giving him 209 triples for the season.
Knueppel’s three-point tally surpassed the previous rookie record of 206 threes in a season set by Sacramento Kings forward Keegan Murray during the 2022-23 campaign. The Hornets wing set the new high mark with 22 games left in Charlotte’s regular season.

Knueppel isn’t just a three-point leader among rookies. He entered Thursday’s slate of games as the only NBA player so far this season to make over 200 three-pointers. His history-making performance only padded his lead over the rest of the league.
Through 59 games, Knueppel has averaged 19.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 3.5 three-pointers made this season. While Cooper Flagg has been the Rookie of the Year frontrunner for most of the season, Knueppel is slowly minimizing the gap between the former Blue Devils.
Bills adding former Ravens QB to coaching staff
The Buffalo Bills are hiring one of Josh Allen’s former foes to help him out next season.
The Bills are reportedly adding former NFL quarterback Trace McSorley to the team’s coaching staff. According to 247 Sports reporter Daniel Gallen, McSorley is joining Joe Brady’s staff as an offensive assistant.
The #Bills are expected to hire former NFL QB Trace McSorley as an offensive assistant on Joe Brady’s staff.

McSorley has spent the last couple of years at Penn State, beginning his coaching career. @danieljtgallen was first on the news. pic.twitter.com/5hM9SGtBAN
Brady most recently served as an assistant quarterbacks coach for his alma mater, Penn State. He joined the Nittany Lions’ coaching staff in early 2025, less than a year after being released by the Washington Commanders. McSorley was going to retain the role had Buffalo not offered him a job.
McSorley and Allen were both unheralded prospects from the 2014 college football recruiting class. McSorley was a three-star recruit who was outside the top-500 of his class, while Allen famously went unranked as he enrolled at Wyoming.
Neither prospect appeared destined for the NFL back then, but both made the leap to the pros. Allen, a 2018 first-round pick, obviously had much more success than McSorley, whom the Ravens selected in the sixth round of the 2019 draft.
McSorley played in nine games in the NFL with just one career start. He tallied 502 yards and a touchdown in those contests. He lost the lone start of his career as a member of the Arizona Cardinals in 2022, going 24/45 for 217 yards in an overtime defeat against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Raiders’ asking price for Maxx Crosby is revealed
The Las Vegas Raiders will not be selling Maxx Crosby for pennies on the dollar.
Las Vegas wants two first-round picks as well as a player in exchange for their star pass rusher Crosby, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports this week. Florio adds that the Raiders would presumably want the player included to be starting-caliber as well.
Crosby, 28, has been with the Raiders for his entire professional career ever since they selected him in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft (No. 106 overall). He has since blossomed into one of the league’s premier defenders, making five straight Pro Bowl teams and earning two All-Pro nods as well.
But Crosby has apparently become unhappy amidst the constant losing in Las Vegas (especially after an NFL-worst 3-14 finish in 2025). There was also a bitter saga between Crosby and the Raiders last year when the star defensive end got upset that the team decided to shut him down for the final games of the season.
Crosby, who is signed through 2029, has since sparked rumors that he may want to join one particular team instead. Meanwhile, the Raiders appear to be doing everything that they can to convince Crosby to stay, including making a notable defensive coordinator hire earlier this month.
But if Las Vegas is ultimately forced to trade away Crosby, it sounds like they intend to get full and proper market value for him. Florio notes that the Raiders’ ask for Crosby is virtually identical to what the Dallas Cowboys got in exchange for Micah Parsons last offseason.
Chris Berman announces when he plans to retire
The end is near for Chris Berman’s career … but not just yet.
The veteran ESPN anchor Berman appeared Thursday on “CNBC Sport” with Alex Sherman. During the podcast episode, Berman revealed when he plans to retire as a broadcaster — after the 2029 NFL season.
“I’ll be almost 75, I think the nation’s more than had enough of me,” said Berman, per the New York Post. “I’m semi-retired now. I’m just so proud of where we’ve been from Day 1 to getting a Super Bowl.”
That projected end date for Berman is no coincidence. He signed a contract extension with ESPN earlier this year that expires right after that 2029 NFL campaign.
Now 70 years old, Berman has been with ESPN since 1979, beginning as an anchor for “SportsCenter.” Ever since then, Berman has filled a number of prominent roles for The Worldwide Leader, hosting “Sunday NFL Countdown” and “NFL Primetime,” anchoring “Baseball Tonight” and doing play-by-play work for the Home Run Derby, and also providing studio coverage for the Stanley Cup Finals (among many other duties).
Nicknamed “Boomer,” Berman has taken a step back from ESPN these days as he is no longer a regular studio anchor. Getting to 2029 however would bring Berman to 50 years with ESPN, marking a fitting send-off for a larger-than-life figure (sometimes very literally so).
Interesting structure of Max Scherzer’s new contract is revealed
Max Scherzer largely has just one thing to focus on next season — innings pitched.
The three-time Cy Young winner Scherzer officially agreed to return to the Toronto Blue Jays late on Wednesday night. We promptly learned that Scherzer was signing a one-year contract for a modest base salary but with up to $10 million in incentives within the deal.
On Thursday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today revealed the exact incentive structure for Scherzer. Mad Max’s incentives on his new contract are entirely tied to innings pitched.
Nightengale reports that Scherzer will earn $1 million once he gets to 65 innings pitched on the season. Then he will get another $1 million for every 10 innings after that (all the way up to 155 innings pitched).
That is a pretty fair structure for both Scherzer, who will turn 42 in July, and the Blue Jays. Scherzer threw 85 total innings for Toronto last season but was all the way up at 152.2 innings back in 2023 with the New York Mets and the Texas Rangers (albeit before he was felled by subsequent herniated disc, hamstring, and nerve issues).
Overall in the 2025 regular season, Scherzer went 5-5 with a 5.19 ERA and 82 strikeouts through 17 total starts. But he managed to produce some very magical moments during Toronto’s run to the 2025 World Series and has now successfully landed a new contract with the team well before Opening Day 2026.
Deandre Ayton made a shady comment about the Lakers after latest loss
Deandre Ayton’s first season in Los Angeles is quickly going from bad to worse.
The Los Angeles Lakers lost on Wednesday to the Orlando Magic by a final score of 110-109. Ayton did manage to score 21 points on 8/11 shooting and grab 13 rebounds.
However, the Lakers lost at the buzzer after a final play in which (among other things that went wrong) Ayton did not roll to the basket after setting a screen for Luka Doncic. Here is the video.
Lebron for the win…pic.twitter.com/bXbicp8eoq
— Oh No He Didn't (@ohnohedidnt24) February 25, 2026
After the game, Ayton spoke with reporters and then proceeded to throw shade at the Lakers with a loud comment that he made to the room as he was heading towards the showers.
“They’re trying to make me Clint Capela,” said Ayton, per ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. “I’m not no Clint Capela.”
The former No. 1 overall Ayton was referring to the Houston Rockets big man Capela, who used to be one of the game’s top lob threats at the rim. Meanwhile, Ayton’s game is a bit different than that as he prefers to camp out in the midrange area and shoot short jumpers.
Ayton is averaging 13.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per game this season for the Lakers, both of which represent career-lows. With a tendency to limit his own ceiling through inconsistent effort and a lack of proper positioning within the halfcourt offense (in addition to some of the other drama that he has gotten into lately), Ayton is clearly not fitting in well right now in Los Angeles.
NFL GM has scathing take on Tyreek Hill
One anonymous NFL executive reportedly thinks 5-time All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill is no longer “worth the squeeze.”
The Miami Dolphins cut ties with Hill earlier this month, making him arguably the most polarizing free agent wide receiver this offseason. At least one NFL general manager isn’t interested.
“We aren’t touching him,” one anonymous GM told NFL reporter Jason La Canfora.
“No chance. We think he’s done. He isn’t a difference-maker anymore. The juice isn’t worth the squeeze. Not even as a vet-minimum guy for us.”
Hill had his 2025 season cut short after he suffered a gruesome knee injury in the Dolphins’ Week 4 contest against the New York Jets. His surgery reportedly went well, but there are obviously question marks about what Hill would look like on the field post-injury. Hill admitted after the procedure that he was considering retirement.
The 8-time Pro Bowler tallied 265 receiving yards and a touchdown in four games last season. His numbers were already on the decline from the previous year, when Hill failed to hit the 1,000-yard mark across a full season.
The 31-year-old was linked to two AFC teams following his release, one being the Kansas City Chiefs. But judging by Andy Reid’s comments about Hill last week, a reunion with Patrick Mahomes may not be as realistic as it seems.
Drew Brees is helping lead a group to buy 1 MLB team
Drew Brees wants to throw it back to the early days of his NFL career.
The retired Hall of Fame quarterback Brees is helping lead a group that is bidding to buy the San Diego Padres, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reported on Thursday. Lin adds that Brees has teamed up with Joe Kudla, owner and CEO of the San Diego area-based clothing company Vuori, to lead one of the five groups that has submitted an initial bid to purchase the Padres.
Brees, 47, was a 13-time Pro Bowler, a seven-time NFL passing yards leader, and a one-time Super Bowl MVP during his illustrious playing career from 2001-20. He also notably played in San Diego for the Chargers over the first several seasons of his pro career (2001-05).
Meanwhile, the Padres are currently owned by the estate of their former owner Peter Seidler, who died in 2023. They were officially put up for sale late last year amid some ugly in-fighting among Siedler’s heirs.
Lin notes that Brees often attends Padres games and also participates in marketing for Kudla’s company Vuori. Now the two men have teamed up to make a bid for the Padres franchise in what could end up as a record-breaking sale.
Brees made over $271 million in salary over the course of his playing days and has since transitioned into a career as an analyst. He continues to be very strongly tied to the New Orleans area (the home of Brees’ other former NFL team, the Saints) but now apparently wants to re-establish his footprint in the San Diego area as well.
Grizzlies signing 40-year-old veteran
The Memphis Grizzlies are adding an elder statesman to their roster filled with youngsters.
The Grizzlies are signing Taj Gibson to a contract, per ESPN’s Shams Charania. Gibson is in his 17th NBA season, with Memphis becoming the eighth team of his career.
The return: Taj Gibson has agreed on a deal with the Memphis Grizzlies, Mark Bartelstein of @PrioritySports tells ESPN. At 40 years old, Gibson is back in the NBA for his 17th season – a big man regarded as a consummate leader and professional over his career. pic.twitter.com/Zo9mQ5KoL7
— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) February 26, 2026
The Grizzlies probably aren’t signing the 40-year-old Gibson for his on-court abilities at this point. With Memphis well outside the postseason picture, the team likely wants the big man to serve as a veteran presence for a team that’s one of the youngest in the NBA.
Last season, Gibson averaged 2.9 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 0.5 blocks across 37 games (11 starts) for the upstart Charlotte Hornets.
The Gibson move came in conjunction with the Grizzlies’ buyout of Kyle Anderson, who plans to sign with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Anderson had been Memphis’ second-most-seasoned player behind 12-year veteran Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.
If Gibson does get action for the Grizzlies this season, he would become just the 35th player ever to take the court in the NBA after turning 40. LeBron James and Chris Paul are the only 40-year-olds to play so far this season, with Jeff Green, Al Horford, and Kyle Lowry all a year away from joining the club.
