Former MLB slugger Joey Gallo is attempting to reinvent himself and revitalize his professional career in the process by switching positions … to pitcher.
Gallo, 31, requested his release from the Chicago White Sox back in March after a challenging spring in which he managed just two hits with 11 strikeouts in 20 at-bats. Shortly after his release was granted, the former New York Yankees outfielder revealed his intentions.
“It’s been fun outfield,” Gallo wrote on X. “Just to be clear, I will be pitching.”
White Sox assistant general manager Josh Barfield anticipated the change.
“He had expressed interest through his agent if it didn’t work out on the Major League team, that he was going to explore the pitching side,” Barfield told MLB.com at the time. “I know it’s something he’s been dabbling around with in between some of the reps here.”
On Friday, Gallo released the first video of his pitching transition. It showcased a bullpen session where his strong arm was on full display.
“First bullpen just dropped,” Gallo captioned the video.
Perhaps more impressive than his pitching accuracy, Gallo displayed solid mechanics.
It’s unclear what the future holds for Gallo, but it’s evident that he was dead serious about his transition to pitcher. And with quality pitching in short supply, MLB teams will likely keep a watchful eye on the two-time All-Star as he continues to develop.
