The New York Mets’ underwhelming start to the season has one of their franchise’s legends going through it.
Mets great Keith Hernandez, who has been a television commentator for the team for nearly three decades now, was caught on a hot mic during Wednesday’s game between the Mets and the Miami Marlins.
The Mets and Marlins had to go into extras to determine a winner. Coming out of a commercial break before the 11th inning, Hernandez could be heard on the SportsNet New York broadcast making a crude comment about the Mets’ struggles at the plate.

“Piss-poor hitting,” Hernandez muttered angrily. Take a listen below.
Despite the embarrassing quip getting broadcasted on live television, the former NL MVP Hernandez told no lies there. The Mets’ bats have largely been asleep to start off the 2025 season, and they entered play on Wednesday with four games of three runs or less scored already on their docket.
Fortunately for Hernandez, he did not have to keep his shaking his fist at the sky for much longer. The Mets went on to score two runs in their half of the 11th and ultimately beat the Marlins 6-5 (to improve to 3-3 on the year).
Now 71 years old, Hernandez continues to put the “color” in color commentary. Usually, he is targeting opposing teams with his ruthless jabs. But this time around, it was the Mets who drew the ire of Hernandez (getting him the maddest that we have seen ever since Newman told him “Nice game, pretty boy”).
