Mariners beat Astros on game-ending Catch of the Year candidate

Mariners outfielder Victor Robles makes a diving catch to beat the Astros

Seattle Mariners outfielder Victor Robles put on his Superman cape Saturday to save the day for his team against the Houston Astros.

The Mariners led the Astros 6-4 with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning at Daikin Park in Houston, Texas. Astros third baseman Carlos Correa came up to the plate opposite Mariners closer Andres Munoz with runners on first and second.

Correa slapped a looping fly ball to shallow right-center field that looked destined to touch grass. Robles wasn’t going to let it happen. He covered a ton of ground to make a diving play as the ball was seemingly just a foot or two away from hitting the dirt.

Astros baserunner Jake Meyers thought it was a hit all the way. He was already past third base when Robles made the catch, which allowed the Mariners outfielder to secure the game-ending double play.

Had Robles muffed the catch, the Astros would have scored at least one run, with another moving into scoring position. The ball could have also ricocheted away from Robles, which would have given the speedy Jeremy Pena a chance to score from first base.

Robles has never been afraid to put his body on the line in order to make a play. The Dominican missed over four months of action due to injury after making a dangerous catch into the netting very early in the season.

While there have been more spectacular plays made by other players this season, few carried as much weight as Robles’ catch. On top of the fact that it was a game-ending play, Robles’ heroics helped the Mariners secure the season tiebreaker over the Astros.

Seattle extended its division lead over Houston to two games thanks to Robles, with just over a week left in the regular season.
