Mets ‘very’ concerned about Yoenis Cespedes’ quad injury

There is some level of alarm within the New York Mets about the injury suffered on Sunday by arguably their best all-around player.

Slugger Yoenis Cespedes had to exit the Mets’ 3-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies in the first inning with what was initially called a hip/groin injury. However, Cespedes said after the game that the injury was actually to his quad, which is worrisome since he landed on the DL in both 2016 and 2017 with quad issues.

“Very,” Mets third baseman Todd Frazier said when asked if he was concerned about the injury, per Greg Joyce of the New York Post. “When anybody has to come out, especially a big dog like that. … I didn’t get to see what happened or how he’s feeling yet, but hopefully he can bounce back quick.”

Joyce does add though that Cespedes said the quad injury was different from years past and that both he and manager Mickey Callaway were noncommittal about his status for Monday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds.

The 32-year-old is hitting just .240 this season but leads the team with seven homers and 26 RBIs. The 17-15 Mets can ill afford a prolonged absence from Cespedes, especially in a year that has already seen so much drama for them.
