Mike Redmond fired less than month after Marlins denied rumors
Miami Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria has struck again.
Loria fired manager Mike Redmond less than two months into the season after the team dropped to 16-22 Sunday. The team pulled the plug on the manager after nearly being no-hit by Shelby Miller in a 6-0 loss to the Braves.
Though it’s not at all funny seeing someone lose his job, the timing of the move is somewhat humorous.
Just last month Miami Herald reporter Clark Spencer said Redmond was on the hot seat following a 3-10 start. A Marlins official denied the report, saying they had “no idea” where the information was coming from.
It apparently was coming from a dose of reality and a hint of knowing Loria’s itchy trigger finger.
Redmond went 62-100 in his first season and improved to 77-85 last season before struggling this year. The Marlins made several acquisitions over the offseason and expected to contend for the NL East, so the poor record was a huge disappointment for them.
Good luck to whoever takes over the job, though there is one positive sign:
Marlins 16-22 when fired Jeff Torborg in 2003. McKeon guided team to World Series. Marlins also 16-22 today when they fired Mike Redmond.
