Padres co-owner Ron Fowler: ‘heads will roll’ if team does not win in 2020
San Diego Padres co-owner and chairman Ron Fowler has been known to talk big at times, and he was back at it on Monday. Only this time he’s promising some action behind his big talk.
Fowler spoke to a group of Padres fans at their Social Summit event and was direct about calling out problems he saw. He Wil Myers’ offense and Eric Hosmer’s defense as disappointments from the season, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Kevin Acee.
The Padres spent big money in consecutive offseasons signing Hosmer and Manny Machado. They had a group of prospects who had arrived. They were supposed to show improvement yet they finished 70-92.
“It was embarrassing for me. We sucked. There were some days, quite honestly, I didn’t want to get out of bed,” Fowler said.
The Padres tanked in the second half of the season and ended up with a bad record. They fired manager Andy Green on September 21. Fowler says that if there is not improvement next year, “heads will roll,” starting with his own.
We have to imagine that means GM A.J. Preller will be on the hot seat. Preller has been the team’s GM since August 2014.
