Rockies to hire Bud Black as manager

Bud Black Padres

It looks like Bud Black is back managing in the NL West.

The Colorado Rockies will name Black as their new manager, per Tommy Stokke of FanRag Sports. Multiple other reports also confirmed the news.

The 59-year-old Black managed the San Diego Padres from 2007 to 2015, going 649-713 (.477) and winning the NL Manager of the Year Award in 2010. His interest in the Rockies job had been reported last month.

Black failed to lead the Padres to the postseason a single time during his nine seasons there and could face similar struggles with a Colorado team that hasn’t won more than 75 games in a season since 2010. But hiring a respected manager with vast experience overseeing pitching staffs (he served as hitting coach for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim from 2000 to 2006, winning the 2002 World Series with them) might be just what the doctor ordered in the Mile High City.
