Tanner Scott gets loud boos from Dodgers fans after blowing no-hitter

The Los Angeles Dodgers somehow managed once again to blow a no-hitter in the ninth inning.

During Monday’s game against the Colorado Rockies at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif., two Dodgers pitchers had combined to no-hit the Rockies through eight innings. Tyler Glasnow struck out 11 batters over seven innings to start the game, and Blake Treinen came in for the Dodgers in the eighth inning and worked a 1-2-3 frame.

But the trouble began when beleaguered Dodgers reliever Tanner Scott entered the game in the ninth inning to try to finish off the job. The very first batter that Scott faced, Colorado’s No. 9 hitter Ryan Ritter, jumped on an 0-1 pitch from Scott and smacked it into left field just short for the wall for a no-hitter-killing double.

In response, the Dodger Stadium crowd immediately pelted Scott with extremely loud boos that were even audible on the television broadcast. Here is the video.

To his credit, Scott did manage to retire the next three consecutive Rockies batters to win the game for the Dodgers and secure the save in the 3-1 victory (Colorado scored a run in the second inning off a walk-stolen base-flyout-sacrifice fly sequence). But there was definitely a confluence of factors there that left Dodgers fans feeling salty.

For one, the Dodgers just lost another no-hitter bid this past Saturday in truly heartbreaking fashion. Ace pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto was no-hitting the Baltimore Orioles through 8.2 innings but got it broken up with just that one out left to go. The Dodgers then completely melted down from there and somehow blew a 3-0 lead to lose 4-3 (video here).

For another, Scott himself has been a nightmare for the Dodgers this season, his first in Los Angeles. Scott entered play on Monday with an ugly 4.56 ERA and an MLB-high nine blown saves on the year. He was also involved in the collapse on Saturday against Baltimore and was even already booed at Dodger Stadium during another rough outing last month.
