Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto vying for a no-hitter against the Orioles

Los Angeles Dodger star Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s pitching masterpiece was ripped to shreds Saturday when it was one brush stroke away from being finished.

Yamamoto entered the ninth inning vying for a no-hitter against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Md. He just had to get through two bottom-of-the-order hitters and Orioles slugger Jackson Holliday.

The All-Star right-hander struck out backup catcher Alex Jackson on three pitches and got first baseman Coby Mayo to fly out one pitch later. Holliday had no plans of being part of Yamamoto’s no-hitter highlight reel.

The Orioles second baseman took a 2-1 inside cutter deep to right field for a home run. Holliday’s solo shot ended Yamamoto’s bid for a no-hitter and put Baltimore on the board, trailing 3-1.

After lying dormant all night, the rest of the Orioles’ batters started waking up. Jeremiah Jackson followed Holliday’s lead with a double to center field off reliever Blake Treinen. The Dodgers pitcher then hit Gunnar Henderson with a pitch and walked the next two batters to bring in another run.

Emmanuel Rivera put the finishing touches on the Orioles’ attempt to play spoiler. He walked off the Dodgers with a two-RBI single up the middle to complete the latter’s epic collapse.

The Dodgers were dealt a harsh reminder that a baseball game is never truly over until the final out.
