Trevor Bauer traded to Reds for Yasiel Puig; Taylor Trammell in 3-team deal

Trevor Bauer

Trevor Bauer’s last act as a member of the Cleveland Indians was his “childish” heave into center field.

Bauer has been traded to the Cincinnati Reds as part of a three-team deal that also involves the San Diego Padres.

The Reds are sending outfielder Yasiel Puig and Double-A pitcher Scott Moss to the Indians, and Taylor Trammell to the Padres as part of the deal. Franmil Reyes, Logan Allen and Victor Nova are being sent to the Indians from the Padres.

Here is what each team is getting in the trade:

Reds: Trevor Bauer
Indians: Yasiel Puig and Scott Moss via Cincinnati; Franmil Reyes, Logan Allen and Victor Nova via San Diego
Padres: Taylor Trammell

Bauer, 28, is making $13 million this season and is under team control for one more season, so Cincinnati will get him for 2020. Puig will be a free agent after the season, so he is a rental for an Indians offense that could use some extra power. Puig has 22 home runs in 99 games this season.

Bauer is 9-8 with a 3.79 ERA. He is set for a pay raise next year that the team maybe felt they couldn’t afford. He is also outspoken and his latest antics may have also made it easier to deal him.

Trammell is a 21-year-old former first-round pick who is batting .236 in Double-A this year. He has batted .273 with a .775 OPS during his minor league career.

Reyes has 27 home runs this season and a .253 batting average. He had 16 homers in 87 games for the Padres last season. Allen, 22, pitched 25 innings for the Padres this season with a 6.75 ERA. He has a 3.08 ERA in his minor league career.

The trade comes a day after another top starting pitcher on the market, Marcus Stroman, was also moved. What’s surprising and equally noteworthy about both deals is that the pitchers ended up going to below .500 teams that were in fourth place in their respective divisions.
