A rough 2025 season for Yordan Alvarez just got even worse.
The Houston Astros slugger Alvarez suffered an ugly ankle injury during Monday’s game against the Texas Rangers. During the first inning at Daikin Park in Houston, Tex., Alvarez drew a walk and then came around to score on a throwing error by Rangers pitcher Jack Leiter.
As Alvarez stepped on the plate just ahead of the throw, his foot slipped, causing a gruesome turn of his left ankle (with his knee seemingly giving way a bit as well). Here is the video of the full sequence.

Take a look at a closer angle.
#Astros Yordan Alvarez really can’t catch a break. His ankle touched the ground while he was upright. That probably shouldn’t happen. pic.twitter.com/Hn8lzHLckY

Alvarez exited the game immediately and was replaced by Zachary Cole in the outfield. The Astros said in an update shortly thereafter that Alvarez had suffered “a left ankle sprain.”
The three-time MLB All-Star Alvarez has had a challenging year, especially from a health perspective. He has been limited to just 48 games this season due to a right hand injury that kept him out of the lineup for nearly four months.
Alvarez has still been productive in 2025 when healthy, batting .273 with a .794 OPS. But now the 28-year-old is dealing with an injury to his lower body, which is especially concerning given his 6-foot-4, 237-pound frame.
At 81-69 on the season, the Astros currently hold the No. 3 Wild Card spot in the American League. With the playoffs set to start in a bit over two weeks, Houston has some reason for major concern right now with their lefty slugger Alvarez.
