UConn head coach Dan Hurley called himself out on Wednesday after his team failed to deliver in front of their home fans.
Hurley blasted UConn’s fan base earlier this week after what he felt was a meager turnout for the Huskies’ 79-75 win Saturday over Georgetown at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn. He touted the team’s 24-2 record, which he believed earned them more than the “paltry crowds” they’ve been playing in front of this season.
The school’s fan base responded with a strong turnout for their Wednesday matchup against Creighton. It was Hurley and No. 5 UConn who didn’t show up on Wednesday, as their team was upset 91-84 by an unranked Creighton squad in front of the very same fans Hurley had called out.
“Crowd was awesome,” Hurley said, via reporter Ryan Cassidy.
“I feel like a little bit of an idiot, where you criticize your home environment. They were awesome today. We have a little bit of a tendency this year to kill the crowd.”
Hurley was at least self-aware enough to admit his side failed to live up to their end of the bargain. UConn was a double-digit favorite entering the showdown, but trailed for most of the contest as if they were the underdogs.
The Bluejays were losers of five of their last six games entering Wednesday, including an 85-58 drubbing at the hands of the Huskies at CHI Health Center Omaha.
