Kyrie Irving has interesting response to question about free agency
There has been a lot of talk this week about Kyrie Irving potentially going back on what he said about re-signing with the Boston Celtics, and the latest remarks the star point guard made about his impending free agency are not going to do much to reassure fans.
Irving, who can opt out of his contract and become a free agent this summer, said before the season that he planned to re-sign with the Celtics. But on Friday, he chose not to reiterate that when given an opportunity.
Kyrie Irving said at the end of the day he’s going to do what’s best for his career. “Ask me July 1,” he said about whether his mindset has changed.

Before you read too much into that, Irving later said Boston is the place he wants to be and criticized the media for their “unwarranted commentary about my future.”
Kyrie now says plan is still to be a C. “obviously Boston is still at the head of the race.”

By trading Kristaps Porzingis to the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday, the New York Knicks have positioned themselves to be able to sign two star players from a loaded free agent class this offseason. There have long been rumblings that Irving wants to play in New York, which is why even Brooklyn Nets fans have chanted for him this year. That noise got even louder with a report that Anthony Davis does not want to be traded to Boston because of the uncertainty about Irving’s future.
We know one scenario with Irving that is almost certainly not going to play out, but his comments on Friday will only add fuel to the fire.
