Report: Russell Westbrook likely to be traded; Celtics the frontrunner

Russell Westbrook

If the Oklahoma City Thudner believe Russell Westbrook is going to leave next summer in free agency, the best thing they can do is trade him and get something in return. One report indicates Westbrook may have already played his last game in OKC.

Howard Beck of Bleacher Report spoke to multiple NBA general managers, and the consensus is that Westbrook does not intend to stay with the Thunder when his contract is up.

“Let’s just say there’s a very strong belief among rival GMs that Russell Westbrook is not intending to stay and that he would leave next summer when he hits free agency,” Beck said. “The logical next step is that Presti, who is always ahead of the curve on these things, will look to trade him. What I’m hearing from some GMs is not only do they think Westbrook will be traded, but they think it will be sooner rather than later — probably before the season starts.”

Beck went on to explain how the Boston Celtics are the most likely destination, as they have loaded up on picks in recent years and could offer the Brooklyn Nets’ 2017 first-round choice as a starting point. Because they have so many draft picks, the Celtics could offer a nice package for Westbrook without giving up key players.

If you heard what Westbrook recently told campers at his basketball camp, you might be inclined to fluff off reports that he will be traded. We wouldn’t be shocked either way.
