Report: Cuonzo Martin fired as coach at Missouri

Cuonzo Martin with the media

Cuonzo Martin’s run as the head coach at Missouri has come to an end.

The Tigers parted ways with Martin, Jon Rothstein reported on Friday.

Martin had been the head coach at Missouri for five seasons but wasn’t living up to the expectations the program had for him. He started off with a bang by landing top recruit Michael Porter Jr. However, Porter suffered a back injury in the first game and missed nearly the entire season. The Tigers actually went 20-13 in Martin’s first year, which turned out to be his best season.

Overall, Missouri went 78–77 under Martin and just 35–53 (.398) in SEC play.

Martin had a 7-year, $21 million deal with Missouri that he signed in 2017. His firing comes a day after Missouri lost in the SEC Tournament to LSU to end their season at 12-21.

Martin, 50, had success at Missouri State, Tennessee and Cal prior to Missouri. He just wasn’t able to win consistently in his first five seasons with the Tigers.
