Gus Malzahn refutes report about reduced contract buyout

Gus Malzahn

Gus Malzahn has refuted a report that says he accepted a reduced contract buyout in order to remain at Auburn.

Malzahn received a monster 7-year, $49 million contract after leading the Tigers to a 10-4 season last year that included a win over rival Alabama. Malzahn was also being mentioned in connection with the Arkansas vacancy last year, which may have increased his leverage.

But Auburn disappointed with a 7-5 season this year, which put pressure on him, and a report last month said the coach agreed to a reduced buyout in order to keep his job. Malzahn says that is not the case.

“My contract has not changed one bit,” Malzahn said Thursday, via AL.com’s Tom Green.

Malzahn also said nobody in the school’s administration asked him to change his contract.

Malzahn has been at Auburn for six seasons and is preparing his team to face Purdue in the Music City Bowl. Getting a win in that game would help quiet the critics, of which he has many.
