Gus Malzahn talks rivalry with Nick Saban

Gus Malzahn

Gus Malzahn maintains a professional relationship with Nick Saban, but as you would expect, the two aren’t exactly best friends.

Saban has been the head coach at Alabama since 2007, while Malzahn has been at rival Auburn since 2013. Malzahn’s Tigers have gone 3-4 against Saban’s Tide, winning two of the last three years.

Malzahn spoke with 247’s Brandon Marcello for a “Social Distance” interview and was asked about the first time he communicated with Saban.

“I think we talked a little bit over the phone when I was the coordinator at Tulsa. He’s professional. It’s a rivalry, but it’s a professional relationship,” Malzahn said.

Malzahn was at Tulsa from 2007-2008, right around the time Saban was getting started at Alabama.

Malzahn was asked whether the two head coaches might become friendly in retirement, and Gus didn’t seem to think that was likely.

“It’s a rivalry,” said Malzahn. “I’ve been here a long time. He’s been there a long time. Some say it’s the best rivalry in college football. So, I doubt it.”

Could he have said anything else? Auburn fans would have flipped if he said otherwise. Plus, based on what he said after last year’s loss, we doubt Saban would have much interest in friendship with Gus.

Malzahn has gone 62-31 in seven seasons at Auburn, putting up two double-digit win seasons and finishing the season ranked in the top 25 five times.
