The Virginia Tech Hokies are in the hunt for a new head coach, and that has led to speculation that the school’s most famous former player might draw some interest.
The Hokies fired Brent Pry after three-plus seasons on Sunday morning following an 0-3 start to the season. Immediately, some began to wonder if Michael Vick could be a possible successor.
Vick is currently in his first season as head coach at Norfolk State, and he was not interested in fueling the speculation linking him back to his former school.
“This team’s got to follow my lead,” Vick told Steven J. Gaither of HBCU Gameday. “My primary focus right now is Norfolk State. That’s all we can focus on. I hope they’re not reading the newspaper clippings or looking into what’s happening on the social pages, because I don’t do it. We’ve got Sacred Heart this week. That’s the most important thing in our lives right now.”
Realistically, Vick is a longshot for the Virginia Tech job. He only just got into coaching and is 1-2 in his first three games at Norfolk State, and just lost to Rutgers 60-10. The jump from that job to an ACC school is enormous.
Vick was a two-year starter at Virginia Tech, where he became a sensation and the eventual No. 1 overall pick in the 2001 NFL Draft. He remains beloved in Blacksburg, but it likely is not the right time for him to return in a coaching capacity.
