Shane Buechele stepped up in a big way for his community.
The SMU quarterback and his girlfriend Paige Vasquez launched a GoFundMe charity page with a target goal of $50,000. The fund was created to give money to the City of Dallas Emergency Assistance Fund to help with damages from COVID-19.
172 donations have been made for nearly $48,000. Buechele and Vasquez will hand the money over to Dallas mayor Eric Johnson at a fire station on Thursday.
“I was impressed with Shane Buechele’s performance on the field last season for SMU, but I am far more impressed with his commitment to his community here in the city of Dallas,” Mayor Johnson said in a statement. “Dallas is a resilient city. We will recover from COVID-19, and the funds raised by Shane and Paige will help us get there.”
Buechele began his college football career at Texas for three seasons but transferred after losing the starting job to Sam Ehlinger. He passed for 3,929 yards, 34 touchdowns and 10 interceptions last season at SMU as a junior transfer.
