Jeopardy! contestants completely whiff on easy sports questions

"Jeopardy!" contestants on the show

Tuesday night’s slate of “Jeopardy!” contestants were clearly not the biggest sports aficionados out there.

During the first round of the popular NBC game show, one of the categories was labeled “21st Century Sports.” The fact that all three contestants exhausted every other category before the sports-related one was a sign — dare I say, clue — of things to come.

The $400 clue was one any baseball fan would have probably gotten in their sleep. The piece of trivia given was about the team that won the 2008 World Series. The clue also made note of Cole Hamels and Ryan Howard, who should have been dead giveaways as famous Philadelphia Phillies players.

Nobody on today’s episode of Jeopardy knew who won the 2008 World Series.

But the lack of sports awareness didn’t stop there.

The $1,000 clue would probably be priced at $10 in terms of difficulty by any self-respecting NBA fan. The “Jeopardy!” clue flashed a picture of Russell Westbrook in an Oklahoma City Thunder uniform.

Defending champion Adriana Harmeyer, a Purdue professor, was at least on the right track with her guess of “Kevin Durant.”

Fans always love to clown “Jeopardy!” geniuses for their lack of sports knowledge. It’s also not the first time sports trivia has proven to be a challenge on the show. The reality is that the same contestants would undoubtedly school the average sports fan in most academic categories.

Nothing like watching the #Jeopardy contests completely whiff on a sports category and calling them idiots like they wouldn’t school me in Russian Literature.

But for one shining moment on Tuesday, sports fans watching “Jeopardy!” felt a little bit smarter.
