Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams appears determined to maintain a distant relationship with his fellow NFL quarterbacks.
Williams admitted in a recent interview that he is not interested in maintaining friendships with rival quarterbacks. The Bears QB said his fellow quarterbacks are “probably great guys,” but he believes he gains an advantage from keeping his distance.
“I think the NFL game has become very friendly, and I don’t necessarily want to be friends, because I want to keep that competitive advantage,” Williams told Brian O’Keefe of Esquire.
Williams seems to believe he garners a mental advantage from not being too close to his opponents. Not every player is like that, and many do not mind fraternizing with their opponents, but Williams is simply different.
This certainly gives some added context to some of Williams’ postgame interactions. One viral moment garnered attention last season, when he seemed eager to get away from CJ Stroud after the Bears lost to the Houston Texans in Week 2. Stroud could be heard encouraging Williams, but the Bears quarterback seemingly wanted no part of it.
Williams is known for some of his offbeat habits. This could be considered one of them, though it does make sense from a certain perspective.
