The former No. 1 overall pick had to sit out the team’s 17-14 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last Monday after sustaining a concussion on a two-point attempt against the Atlanta Falcons the week prior (video here). Veteran backup Derek Anderson was subpar in his fill-in start for Newton, throwing for 278 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions in the defeat.
Newton had been expected to be back under center to face the Saints, so hopefully his return to the lineup marks the end of the storm for the Panthers, who have dropped their last three games in a row to fall to 1-4 on the season.
