Arizona Cardinals general manager Monti Ossenfort caused some speculation about quarterback Kyler Murray with some comments he made about the quarterback on Thursday.

Ossenfort was asked if Murray will remain the starting quarterback once his foot injury has healed. The general manager did ultimately say Murray will be “out there” once he is capable of playing his best. Ossenfort did, however, leave some wiggle room in how that might be interpreted.

“I know that’s always a hot discussion,” Ossenfort said, via Darren Urban of the Cardinals’ official website. “We’re going to continue to try and get Kyler where he can get back to doing the things he can do on the field. When he’s doing that, he’ll be out there.”

The simplest way to read this is that Murray will play when he is healthy. Whether he intended to or not, however, Ossenfort leaves the door open for this to be interpreted as a message that Murray needs to play better if he wants to start ahead of Jacoby Brissett.

The comment comes one week after Brissett, starting in Murray’s place, looked much more effective than Murray has this season. Brissett went 27/44 for 320 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in a 31-27 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Murray, in contrast, has yet to post a 300-yard passing game this season, and the Cardinals have only hit the 27-point mark once in his five starts.

Murray himself seems to have some doubts about his long-term future. If the Cardinals do not feel he is maximizing their offense, it would make sense to start someone else, though benching a former No. 1 overall pick is always a longshot.
