Chargers reportedly eyeing 2-time Super Bowl champion for head coaching job
The Los Angeles Chargers appear to have an intriguing new name on their coaching wishlist.
NFL insider Josina Anderson of CBS Sports reported this week that Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy is one of the names surfacing around the Chargers’ head coach opening. Anderson also mentions Dan Quinn, Jim Harbaugh, and “possibly” Bill Belichick as the other names that are in the mix.
Much of the speculation surrounding the Chargers job, which opened up last month after the firing of Brandon Staley, has been focused on the possibility of a smash-hit hire like a Belichick or a Harbaugh. But Bieniemy would be a very interesting second-tier option for the job.
The 54-year-old Bieniemy was a two-time Super Bowl champion as the offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs. He now serves as the OC and assistant head coach of the Commanders and has been the one calling the plays for them this season. But it has been an imperfect union in a lot of ways as the Commanders sit at a mere 4-12, ranking 21st in total offense and 23rd in points per game. There were also signs that emerged as early as the preseason that Washington’s players were struggling under Bieniemy.
Bieniemy has received numerous interviews for head coaching jobs in the past and was recently linked to the HC position for an NFC team. Now it sounds like the Chargers will give Bieniemy a long, hard look as well.
