Charlie Weis: I would have made Brady Quinn a winner

Charlie Weis was fired by Notre Dame after going 35-27 in five seasons as head coach of the football team, but he worked with quarterback Brady Quinn to go 19-6 in his first two years. Weis, now the coach at Kansas, believes he could have turned Quinn into a winner at the NFL level.

“Brady could have been a starting quarterback for me in the NFL,” Weis told the Kansas City Star.

“Go back and look at those numbers for the two years he played for me,” Weis said. “He was great. He wasn’t good. And I know if I had him as a quarterback, I would have felt very comfortable that I could have won no matter where we were.”

Quinn was drafted in the first round by the Browns in 2007 and has 10 touchdowns and 9 interceptions in his career. He started in 2009 but failed to consistently move the football, and he’s been a backup since then.

The comments are laughable for two reasons. For one, Quinn has been in the NFL for five years and is viewed as a backup quarterback. Two, Weis has an absurdly overinflated view of his ability as a coach. He parlayed his time as offensive coordinator for the Patriots into a gig with Notre Dame, then the Chiefs, then Florida, and now Kansas. He had success with the Pats because Tom Brady was his quarterback, and he was only a mediocre coach with Notre Dame after Brady Quinn left. If he’s some grand offensive wizard he takes himself to be, then why did Florida’s quarterbacks flame out so badly under his watch last season?

I do know one thing: With the way he talks about himself, at least he has no need to pay for a publicist or agent.
