Drew Lock has telling response to not being named Giants’ starter
Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the New York Giants’ decision to bench Daniel Jones is that they named Tommy DeVito the starter, and it does not sound like Drew Lock is too thrilled about that.
Lock was the primary backup to Jones through the first 10 games of the season. That, in theory, should have meant that head coach Brian Daboll viewed him as the second-best quarterback on the roster. Lock will still be the backup in Week 12 behind DeVito, however.
When asked on Wednesday about not being elevated to a starting role, Lock had a telling response.
“You know, that’s a question I might still have for myself,” Lock said. “It was expressed to me that I was going to be (the backup). I don’t know, it’s just an interesting situation. Not much I can really say about it besides, again, I’m gonna be here for him and we’re still communicating and still very good friends, believe it or not.”

Lock is a former second-round pick and has started 23 career games. The Giants signed him to a $5 million deal this offseason. There was even some talk over the summer that Lock was told he would have a chance to compete for a starting job.
One of the main reasons the Giants have moved on from Jones is that they want to avoid having to pay him a huge injury guarantee for next season. A closer look at Lock’s contract will tell you the team might have some financial incentive to keep Lock on the bench, too.
