Eagles will allow Nick Foles to become free agent, not tag him
Nick Foles has already opted out of his end of his contract with the Philadelphia Eagles for 2019, but the team could still use the franchise tag on him in an attempt to work out a trade. The Super Bowl MVP was likely glad to hear that the Eagles will not go that route.
On Wednesday, Eagles executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman said Foles will not be franchise tagged. The quarterback will become a free agent next month.
Roseman on Foles: “He deserves an opportunity to lead a team.” Says it’s a goal of his. Hard decision. Felt like it was the right thing to do.

Foles led the Eagles to a victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII, and he once again performed well down the stretch and into the playoffs last season when Carson Wentz went down with an injury. He wants an opportunity to start somewhere, and this will allow him to sign wherever he wants rather than interested teams having to give up a draft pick for him.
There has been one team consistently linked to Foles this offseason, and the 30-year-old becoming a free agent will make it easier for that team to land him. It would be a surprise if Foles isn’t a starter in Week 1 next season.
