Gary Kubiak to Broncos as head coach ‘very likely’

Gary-Kubiak-TexansJohn Elway got rid of John Fox as Broncos head coach this week and blew out the rest of the coach’s staff, and it looks like he has his sights set on a replacement.

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reports that Gary Kubiak going to the Broncos as head coach is “very likely.” La Canfora says he has heard that Kubiak is “far and away Elway’s top choice.”

Kubiak is set to interview for the position this weekend.

How likely is Kubiak to become the team’s head coach? The Denver Post says Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin and former Bills head coach Doug Marrone cancelled their scheduled interviews with the Broncos. The indication is that they feel it would be a waste of their time.

Kubiak turned down head coaching interviews with the Jets and Bears and issued a statement last weekend saying he wanted to remain as Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator. However, Kubiak’s ties to the Broncos and the allure of the team’s talent in place has to be appealing. Kubiak was Elway’s backup quarterback and coached the team’s offense from 1995-2005 before becoming head coach of the Texans.

In addition to Kubiak, the Broncos could be interested in Bengals defensive backs coach Vance Joseph as their next defensive coordinator. Joseph interviewed with the team on Thursday night.

One concern the Broncos and Kubiak could have is the chest problem the coach experienced as his tenure with the Texans was coming to an end in 2013. Maybe coaching a winning team might help alleviate some of his stress.
