Jaguars benching Blake Bortles for Cody Kessler
The Jacksonville Jaguars are making some major changes after they lost their seventh consecutive game on Sunday, and one of them could be moving on from Blake Bortles for the rest of the season and beyond.
On Monday, Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone announced that Blake Bortles will be benched in favor of Cody Kessler for Week 13.
Bortles was already benched once in the middle of a game earlier this season, but Marrone said he only made the move in an attempt to light a fire under the team. Bortles resumed starting the following game, but he has continued to play poorly and Jacksonville has one of the worst offenses in football.
Like former offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, who was relieved of his duties on Monday, Bortles indicated earlier in the year that he believes he has become the scapegoat in Jacksonville. Whether that is true or not, he may have played his last snap for the team. The Jaguars signed Bortles to a three-year extension last offseason, but it only included $26.5 million in guaranteed money. They could very well move on from him after the season.
