Jamal Adams reportedly will not participate in Jets’ offseason program

Jamal Adams

Jamal Adams said fairly recently that he wants to remain with the New York Jets despite the issues he has had with the team, but the All-Pro safety could soon change his mind.

Adams is not expected to take part in the Jets’ voluntary virtual offseason program in the coming weeks, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports. That likely has to do with the fact that the team has made no real effort to sign Adams to an extension since the 2019 season ended.

Adams said back in January that he and the Jets were in the very early stages of discussing a new contract and that he expected to get an extension before the 2020 season. While it is possible that could still happen, it would not be a surprise if he held out even when mandatory workouts begin.

The Jets reportedly shopped Adams at the trade deadline last season, and the 24-year-old did not hide the fact that he was upset about it. Adams insisted he had quickly moved past the drama, but you can understand why he wants a new contract.

Adams, who had 75 total tackles and 6.5 sacks in 2019, is scheduled to earn $3.5 million next season. The Jets will almost certainly pick up the fifth-year option on his rookie deal, which will pay him just under $13 million in 2021. Adams wants more long-term security than that, and you could easily argue that he deserves it after making the Pro Bowl in each of his first three NFL seasons.
