Report: Jimmy Garoppolo, 49ers making serious progress on long-term extension
The San Francisco 49ers will likely use the franchise tag on Jimmy Garoppolo if they can’t reach a long-term extension with the quarterback before the March 1 deadline, but it does not appear it is going to come to that.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported on Sunday that contract talks between Garoppolo and the Niners have “gained significant momentum” and an agreement could be in place in the near future. While there are still details to be ironed out, sources told Rapoport both sides are optimistic an extension will get done, and it will make Garoppolo one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL.
Niners general manager John Lynch recently said the team is working hard toward agreeing on a new deal with Garoppolo and that it “makes too much sense not to happen.”
Garoppolo has not lost a game as an NFL starter, and he went 5-0 with the 49ers this season. He’s also still cashing in bonus checks from his time with the Patriots, so life is pretty good for Jimmy G. at the moment.
