Joe Namath wants Christian Hackenberg to win Jets QB job

New York Jets legend Joe Namath is rooting for a rather surprising competitor to win the team’s quarterback job.

Namath is pulling for second-year quarterback Christian Hackenberg to take over the job instead of veteran Josh McCown.

“I’d like to see Hackenberg get a shot, and I’d like to see him win the job,” Namath said Tuesday, via Rich Cimini of ESPN. “That would give us the [hope of], ‘Hey, lookie here. Maybe we don’t do it this year, but boy, we’ll get ready next year. We’ll get ready the year after that.'”

Namath clarified that he has no problem with McCown.

“I know what Josh McCown can do,” Namath said. “He’s a good leader. He’s solid. Hopefully, the team can step up and give him support [if he plays].

“I’m not wishing Josh any bad luck, but I certainly would like to see Hackenberg blossom.”

Whatever Namath thinks, the fact is that Hackenberg has received terrible reviews from those who have seen him practice. The Jets insist he has a chance to start, but it sure seems like a long shot.
