Kenyan Drake calls decision to throw helmet during brawl ‘stupid’
Kenyan Drake was ejected from Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills for his role in an ugly melee, and the Miami Dolphins running back admits he could have handled the situation a lot better.
On Monday, Drake told reporters it was “definitely stupid on my part” to throw a Bills defender’s helmet as players were brawling late in the game. He said he got involved in the scuffle because he was trying to protect Jarvis Landry, who had supposedly been grabbed around the neck by Buffalo safety Jordan Poyer.
“We had a little wrestling match on the bottom of the pile,” Drake said, via Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald. “Whoever’s helmet it was, I kind of just grabbed it. Heat of the moment, I was like, ‘If I’m going to go out, I guess this is how I’m going to go out.’”
Drake angrily threw the helmet about 20 yards, and he’s fortunate he didn’t injure someone. That’s the part that bothers him the most about his outburst.
“I let the situation get the little best of me,” Drake admitted. “I think player safety is the most important thing, so after I threw the helmet, looking back on it, I felt like, ‘Who knows where the helmet could have landed?’ Things of that sort. From that standpoint, I feel like I needed to take a step back, look at myself, look at the situation, understand I put a lot of people at risk.”
Drake said he would not be surprised if the NFL fines him, and we would say that is almost guaranteed to happen.
