Good thing Packers head coach Mike McCarthy enjoys NASCAR, otherwise we might not have heard this story. Apparently Brett Favre is going to have ankle surgery some time soon, but he’s a little off schedule.
The 37-year-old quarterback was supposed to have surgery on his left ankle the day after the season, but skipped it and had yet to reschedule. Now, as next season awaits, [McCarthy’s] “absolutely” certain Favre will be in place for minicamps.
Does this confirm that Brett Favre wasn’t originally planning to come back to the Packers? Seems to fit in well with the emotional on-field interview he gave NBC in his last game of the year.
Simple reasoning here — someone planning to play wants to get surgery immediately to prepare for the upcoming season. Someone who’s contemplating retirement might delay surgery thinking he has the rest of his life to get it done. But that’s just my spin on it.
Oh yeah, the CBS Sportsline story comes from Daytona, where the reporters ran down Mike McCarthy, who apparently spent the weekend hanging out with Wisconsin native Matt Kenseth.
Here’s Favre’s last interview of the season following the win over the Bears as a refresher:
