New York Jets expected to fire GM John Idzik

John Idzik Jets

It looks like New York Jets fans will finally get their wish.

The Jets are expected to fire GM John Idzik according to ESPN New York’s Rich Cimini, who listed several potential candidates for the GM job. Jets owner Woody Johnson was said to be 50-50 on keeping Idzik as of 10 days ago, so this report is no surprise.

There have been other recent signs that the team would be looking for a new GM.

Johnson favorited a tweet on Twitter saying he should fire Idzik. Then on Friday, a video on the team’s website hinted at a firing.

In a video titled “Is Johnson comfortable with the Jets’ track?”, a reporter critiques all of the moves from the Idzik era. Many of the strikes against Idzik mentioned in the video include poor drafts — led by the selection of quarterback Geno Smith — and the lack of spending on top free agent cornerbacks, leaving the Jets with a poor secondary in 2014.

The video closes with this comment:

“But there are plenty of improvements to be made, and Johnson will ultimately decide if Idzik remains the right man to lead his football department in 2015.”

Having this video on the team’s site seems like a way to prepare fans for what is to come. And based on the way fans have been acting towards Idzik, they will likely be pleased about a firing.

Earlier this week, the New York Daily News’ Manish Mehta also reported that Charley Casserly would be one of two consultants to spearhead the search for a new GM and head coach after the season.
