An NFL writer for the South Florida’s Sun-Sentinel issued an apology Wednesday over a series of tweets that questioned the motives of the woman accusing Antonio Brown of sexual assault.
Brown’s former trainer, Britney Taylor, accused Brown of sexually assaulting her on three different occasions and filed a federal lawsuit against the wide receiver. In response, Omar Kelly, a beat writer and columnist for the Sun-Sentinel, sent a series of tweets calling Taylor’s allegations a “money grab” and questioning why she did not report the assault immediately after it happened.
No apology yet from @OmarKelly of the @SunSentinel, but someone finally told him to delete the initial awful tweet. Some of his replies still exist. And screenshots are forever. pic.twitter.com/iDVoRd8oMr

Kelly’s tweets were heavily criticized and displayed a lack of understanding of sexual assault survivors and why some choose not to report immediately, if at all. Later Wednesday, he apologized, stating he’d received “plenty of insight” as well as stories from survivors about why they did not go to law enforcement.
Please allow me to address something I stated earlier on Twitter. pic.twitter.com/lC5IKX6gxm

Kelly’s original statements followed the same logic that Brown’s attorney did in defending his client. It’s alright if Kelly wants to presume Brown’s innocence until proven guilty, but criticizing the accuser and her motives seriously crossed a line.
