Osi Umenyiora: Giants need to harass, pressure Tony Romo

We are amazingly only a day away from the opening game of the 2012 NFL season featuring the Cowboys and defending Super Bowl champion Giants. Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora made an appearance on NFL Network’s “NFL AM” Monday morning, and while he wouldn’t divulge any secrets about the best ways to stop the Giants’ defensive line, he did say what they’re aiming to do to Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.

“He has a very quick release, we know he’s not going to sit there and hold the ball he’s going to try and get the ball out quick the receivers are going to run shorter routes they are going to throw quick passes and try to run the ball,” he said. “As many times as we can get back there, I think the key is getting back there and harassing him and pressuring him. Sacks are going to come sometimes they come sometimes they don’t, but the key is getting pressure on him and I think we are going to try our best to do that.”

You figure that harassing and pressuring the opposing quarterback would be the key to the Giants winning, but that’s not always their objective. Sometimes their d-line might stay back in order to crowd things to stop a team’s running game by plugging holes. But that naturally sounds like a sound plan to stop Romo. Between Dez Bryant and DeMarco Murray, the Cowboys have fantastic offensive weapons, but their weakness is on the offensive line. If any team can exploit that, it’s the Giants.
