Patrick Mahomes weighs in on new NFL overtime rules
Patrick Mahomes has been involved in a number of high-profile overtime playoff games in the last few years. He and the Kansas City Chiefs have been on both sides of the league’s overtime rule, so perhaps it is no surprise that he is not particularly concerned with the changes the league is making.
Mahomes reacted to the new rule by telling Brian Sozzi of Yahoo Finance that he would simply be focused on doing what was necessary to win the game, no matter when the Chiefs possess the ball in a hypothetical playoff overtime.
“I’m sure there’ll be moments where you feel like it’s a good decision. But then there will be moments when you score that touchdown first and you feel like it’s a bad one,” Mahomes said. “So you just go out there and play and try to win the game whatever way.”
In 2019, the Chiefs lost the AFC Championship game in overtime after losing the coin toss to the New England Patriots, and never got the ball in the extra period. The reverse happened earlier this year, when the Chiefs beat the Bills in overtime after winning the coin toss. That game was largely the catalyst for the new rules.
Mahomes has the right attitude. He can’t influence the rules. It’s simply up to him to make the best of whatever situation he winds up in.
