Russell Wilson signed a one-year deal with the New York Giants, which may cast him into the role of bridge quarterback. He may be fine with that, but he had a fairly blunt response when asked about potential competition.
Wilson was asked during his introductory Zoom conference what his thoughts were regarding the Giants potentially drafting a quarterback at No. 3 overall. The veteran quarterback suggested he was going to focus on what he could control instead.
“Handle yourself first. … Control what you can control. … Lead by example,” Wilson told reporters.

Russell Wilson was asked about the possibility of the Giants drafting a quarterback (potentially as high as No. 3 overall) and being a mentor.

His approach: "Handle yourself first. … Control what you can control. … Lead by example." #Giants
This certainly makes it sound like Wilson is not terribly interested in serving as a mentor to a young quarterback. That is not necessarily a big deal. There is a real chance Wilson will only spend one year with the Giants depending on how the team approaches the draft.
The Giants have been linked to Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders at No. 3 overall, though that is far from a sure thing. It is possible they could target a quarterback later in the draft if they decide to go in a different direction in the first round. Either way, the team still has a long-term need at quarterback that Wilson does not fill, and he may have to deal with the fact that the team will commit valuable resources to finding that quarterback now rather than later.
This does not appear to be Wilson’s ideal situation. However, it became clear that it was the most obvious path to him being a starter in 2025.
