Troy Aikman on Monday made his thoughts on Mike McCarthy very clear, and may have sent a message to Jerry Jones in the process.

Late in the second quarter of the “Monday Night Football” game between the Baltimore Ravens and Los Angeles Chargers, Aikman and announcer Joe Buck talked about the Cowboys’ win over the Washington Commanders. Dallas won the game 34-26 in a game that featured a crazy ending.

Aikman took the opportunity to praise McCarthy for getting the victory.

“It was impressive against a team that’s right in the hunt. And I’ve said it … Mike McCarthy’s a hell of a football coach,” Aikman said.

That’s a nice endorsement from the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback of the team’s current coach.

McCarthy is in his fifth season with the Cowboys, which is the final year of his contract. He went 12-5 three seasons in a row, but all of those years ended in postseason disappointments. Dallas going 4-7 this season led many to feel that McCarthy’s fate would be sealed. Aikman even said last week he thought it was unlikely that McCarthy would be brought back by Dallas.

Perhaps this is Aikman’s way of sending a message to team owner Jerry Jones about how the situation should be handled.
