Bryson DeChambeau expressed strong frustration over course conditions during the first round of LIV Golf Mexico City at Club de Golf Chapultepec.
After blading a greenside bunker shot on the 16th hole, his ball landed in a patchy area of sparse grass and exposed mud. Video footage captured the two-time major champion pointing out the damaged turf to his caddie and spectators, remarking sarcastically.
“You’ve got destroyed grass,” he said. “Oh, this is rough? Definitely. Good to see.”
DeChambeau, who is no stranger to outbursts, summoned a rules official and requested a second opinion, gesturing animatedly.
“Guys, this is what we’re playing with, apparently,” he said. “You’ve got to have a rule here. It’s unbelievable, absolutely out of the question.”
Officials upheld standard golf rules, requiring him to play the ball as it lay. He chipped to within six feet and sank the putt to save par.
The tantrum echoes similar complaints DeChambeau made about the venue’s bunkers last year. He completed the round at even par, tied for 29th and nine shots off the lead.
The incident drew attention amid broader questions surrounding LIV Golf’s future.
