Phil Mickelson happy with his game despite runner-up finish

Phil Mickelson

Phil Mickelson may be disappointed that he wasn’t able to win The Open Championship, but he is still happy with his game.

Mickelson shot 17-under and lost to Henrik Stenson by three strokes — the lowest ever major total for a runner-up. After finishing second, Mickelson told NBC’s Steve Sands that he still sees some positives despite not winning.

“I really like where my game is coming and how it’s coming around and the shots I’m hitting with ease how I’m able to control the ball off the tee and play stress-free golf,” said Mickelson. “Three out of four rounds I played pretty stress-free golf, hit a lot of good shots. I’m happy with where my game has come this year. I just haven’t gotten the win yet, but I feel like I’m getting some momentum and it’s getting better and better each week.”

Mickelson now has 11 runner-up finishes in majors, second only to Jack Nicklaus’ 19. Though he did not win his second Open Championship, the second-place finish still is a much more encouraging sign for Lefty after he failed to make the cut at the Masters and US Open this year.
