Former Ohio State offensive lineman Kirk Barton was involved in a fatal car crash Saturday that killed another driver.
Barton, 40, was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide over the collision he allegedly caused in the wee hours of Saturday morning. According to a report from NBC 4 in Columbus, Barton’s Ford F150 truck was eastbound on the U.S. 33 highway at a “high rate of speed” when he struck a Lexus on West Bridge Street in Dublin, Ohio.
24-year-old Ethan Perry, who was behind the wheel of the Lexus, was declared dead at the scene. Barton reportedly suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Per court documents, Barton was said to be driving on the wrong side of the road leading up to the crash. Barton reportedly admitted to drinking alcohol before the crash and had slurred speech while speaking to police officers. His arraignment is scheduled for Monday.
Barton played right tackle for Ohio State from 2003 to 2007. He was named team captain during his final year with the Buckeyes.
The Chicago Bears selected Barton in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL Draft. While Barton played just one official game in the pro ranks, he also had stints with the Miami Dolphins, San Francisco 49ers, Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions, Denver Broncos, and Carolina Panthers.
