Anderson Silva might have some injury concerns heading into his fight with Chris Weidman at UFC 162 in Las Vegas.
Luis Prota of Esporte Interativo in Brazil reported that Silva may have a fractured rib that could put his status for the upcoming fight in jeopardy. The questions about Silva’s status may be slightly overblown, but Prota says a source at a clinic told him Silva came in to get X-rays on the rib.
According to MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani, any reports about Silva not being able to compete at UFC 162 are inaccurate. Helwani reports that Silva’s camp says the fighter is totally fine and never suffered any rib injuries. Helwani also says UFC boss Dana White denies the report.
I’m guessing most of the excitement over this report came from the speculation that Silva could miss the event. That really seemed to be overblown. It seems like the only issue here is that Silva may just have a rib injury to watch out for heading into the fight. But this really is nothing new — most fighters have injuries entering their fights because of grueling training camps. The difference is we usually don’t find out about the injury until after the fight, if at all.
Weidman may now have a secret about what to target on Silva’s body in their fight. The real challenge, though, will be trying to actually catch The Spider.
