Jon Jones wants to fight Cain Velasquez, thinks it could happen soon

Jon JonesJon Jones says he wants to fight Cain Velasquez, and the UFC light heavyweight champion believes the fight could happen sooner than you think.

At The Gentleman’s Expo in Toronto last weekend, Jones was asked if he has considered changing weight classes.

“Yeah, definitely,” Jones answered the fan. “I think that’s going to happen within the next two years. I’ll go up to heavyweight permanently.

“I am looking to take a superfight sooner than later — within the next year. I’ve been really thinking about me and Cain Velasquez going at it. I think it’ll be huge for the sport.”

Jones is 19-1, with his only loss coming by disqualification, and he has pretty much run through the light heavyweight division. He was challenged by Alexander Gustafsson in his last fight, and Glover Teixeira could also be a tough contender. Maybe he would face one or the other before moving up permanently.

One reason why Jones is looking at Velasquez, the current UFC heavyweight champion, is because he believes the 6-foot-1, 249-pound opponent is more his size.

“He’s definitely the toughest guy in the division and he’s not that big, so I think it would be a really entertaining fight. Don’t be surprised if you see that sooner than later.”

Jones said he weighs about 230 pounds right now and would gain about 10 pounds of muscle to fight someone like Cain. I’d love to see it happen.

I’ve said in the past that for Jones to really be challenged, he would have to move up in weight. The good news for MMA fans is it sounds like that will happen before too long.
