Saturday evening’s Federal League Championship Game between the Charlestown Chiefs and Syracuse Bulldogs has become an even more enticing matchup than originally anticipated. A source in the Syracuse front office tells LBS that the Bulldogs have signed bruiser Ogie Ogilthorpe to a one-game contract to help put them over the top.
The Bulldogs are one of several teams in the Federal League that has complained about the recent goonish tactics employed by the Chiefs, but they are the only team that has taken to signing extra enforcers in preparation for a match with Charlestown.
The Chiefs recently developed a violent style of play after player/coach Reggie Dunlap began encouraging the team to fight more during games. The change in the team’s style coincided with Dunlap letting loose the Hanson Brothers — a trio of youngsters who specialize in enforcing and fighting. The first few games the Hanson Brothers were signed they remained on the bench, but once Dunlap realized their type of play excited the fans, he understood the value of increasing the team’s appeal at the box office.
The threat of the Chiefs being moved to Florida under their new owner is something we reported last month here at LBS, and no doubt Charlestown will give their all on Saturday in hopes of winning the Championship. Taking the Federal League title may be the only defense the team has against being moved.
