Alejandro Bedoya scored a goal for the Philadelphia Union in their game against DC United on Sunday and delivered a political message that could not be missed.
The Union captain scored in the third minute and then ran to where an FS1 field microphone was located so he could share a message that would be heard by all viewers. “Hey congress, do something now, end gun violence, let’s go!” Bedoya said.

The 32-year-old’s comments come in the wake of two mass shootings in the United States within 13 hours. A shooting at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas on Saturday left 20 dead. 13 hours later, a mass shooting took place in Dayton, Ohio, leaving 10 dead. A week prior, a mass shooting in Gilroy, Calif. left four dead and 15 injured. There have now been 20 mass shootings in the U.S. this year (mass shootings being defined as a non-drug/organized crime-related fatal shooting in the same location around the same time that injured or killed at least four people).
Bedoya was born in New Jersey and grew up in Florida. He made appearances for the US Men’s National Team from 2010-2017.
