Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd Wanted Mark Cuban to Spend $150-200k on Each Championship Ring

Many Dallas Mavericks complained when they learned that owner Mark Cuban wanted to get his players something other than traditional rings for winning the NBA championship. There was an idea that Cuban wanted to get them bracelets, but Dirk and Rick Carlisle wanted the rings instead. The players won the debate and they’re getting traditional rings, though they won’t receive them on Christmas. Apparently some of the players wanted the rings to be pretty flamboyant.

“We took all the proposals from everybody, all the hip jewelers and all the big time distributors, everybody,” Cuban said Tuesday on 105.3 The Fan (KRLD-FM). “They all sent samples and pictures and mock-ups and we laid them all out in the locker room. We had everybody sign off on what was their favorites.”

Cuban asked Dirk and Kidd how much they wanted him to spend on each ring. They said about $150,000-$200,000. Unfortunately for them, that couldn’t happen.

“I’m like, ‘OK, you do know the NBA has a limit on how much we can spend, right?’ And it’s not 150 grand, trust me,” Cuban said. “I’m not going to tell you the exact amount but it’s nowhere near. The NBA, because they don’t want salary cap violations, puts a limit on how much you can spend on any given ring for any player.”

Maybe that’s why Cuban spent so much money celebrating the Finals win — he knew he’d be limited on how much he could spend for the rings.
