Bo Bichette came up with Blue Jays’ risky World Series plan

The Toronto Blue Jays are going with a radical plan to get Bo Bichette back into their lineup for the World Series, and Bichette was the one behind it.

The Blue Jays will start Bichette at second base for Game 1 of the World Series on Friday and expect him to remain there for the rest of the series. This is despite the fact that Bichette has never played the position at the MLB level and only played it for 30 games during his minor league career.

“I brought it up,” Bichette told reporters Friday. “It was something that I felt like I could get ready for quicker than another position. I just want to be ready to help the team in any way.”

Bichette missed both the ALDS and ALCS due to a knee injury, but is ready to go for the World Series. Andres Gimenez has taken over his duties at shortstop during the playoffs, where he has played solid defense and driven in eight runs in 11 playoff games. In contrast, the Blue Jays have frequently used light-hitting Isiah Kiner-Falefa at second base, and he has hit just .238.

The Blue Jays are taking a significant risk. Bichette is not regarded as a top-tier defender at shortstop, so putting him at a position he has even less familiarity with could go wrong. The team wants his bat in the lineup, though, no matter what it takes, and he has been extremely motivated to get back in the lineup.

Bichette hit a team-leading .311 during the regular season with 44 doubles and 18 home runs.
